ANDERSON, Calif. — California Highway Patrol officers uncovered an underground bunker and a large cache of illegal firearms while investigating an illicit cannabis cultivation operation in Anderson, according to a CHP press release.
CHP said its Northern Division Canine Unit received information in December 2025 about a suspected illegal marijuana grow on a property in Anderson. After securing a search warrant, CHP Air Operations conducted an overflight that helped confirm the information, officials said.

Following about a month-long investigation, members of the CHP Northern Division Warrant Service Team executed a search warrant at the property on Jan. 20. During the search, officers discovered an underground bunker accessible through a 100-foot-long culvert. CHP said the bunker had power, ventilation, a concrete floor with built-in drainage and supplies used to cultivate marijuana.

Officers seized 13 firearms, four soft body armor vests, 30 high-capacity magazines and about 10,000 rounds of ammunition, including armor-piercing rounds, CHP said. The firearms included a sawed-off shotgun, three AR-15-style rifles — one with an obliterated serial number — and two guns reported stolen in 1978 and 2016.

Michael Jay Kamfolt, 40, of Anderson (pictured above), was arrested and booked on multiple weapons-related charges, according to CHP. The charges include possession and manufacturing of an assault weapon, manufacturing of a short-barreled rifle, possession and conversion of a firearm into a machine gun, possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, manufacturing and possession of an undetectable firearm, possession of stolen firearms, manufacturing of a so-called ghost gun, possession of armor-piercing ammunition and possession of high-capacity magazines. He posted bail by 5:00 pm yesterday.
List of charges:
30605(a) PC — Possession of an assault rifle
30600(a) PC — Manufacturing of an assault rifle
