MINNEAPOLIS — Federal immigration officers shot and killed another man during an operation today in Minneapolis, as protests continued in a city still reeling from a fatal shooting earlier this month.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed that federal agents shot and killed the man during the operation. A hospital record obtained by The Associated Press shows the man was 51 years old and died after sustaining at least one gunshot wound.

Video from the scene appears to show several federal agents wrestling the man to the ground before he was shot.

The Department of Homeland Security said the man was armed with a gun and had two magazines. DHS said the situation was “evolving” and released a photo of a handgun it said was recovered.

The shooting happened amid near-daily protests in the Twin Cities following the Jan. 7 death of 37-year-old Renee Good, who was killed when an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer fired into her vehicle. Saturday’s shooting occurred about a mile from where Good was killed.

After the shooting, an angry crowd gathered near the scene, shouting at federal officers and demanding they leave. Border Patrol agents deployed tear gas and flash-bang devices as officers blocked off nearby intersections. Black smoke rose from a dumpster fire lit by protesters about a block away.

Minnesota Democrats sharply criticized the operation. Sen. Tina Smith said ICE should leave the area so Minneapolis police can secure the scene. Sen. Amy Klobuchar called the shooting “horrific” and urged federal officials to pull immigration agents out of the state.

Authorities have not released the man’s name. The investigation remains ongoing.
