DONNER SUMMIT, Calif. — The freeway at Donner Summit is closed today after high winds created full whiteout conditions and near-zero visibility, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Truckee office.
In a social media post at 12:05 p.m., CHP Truckee said snow was blowing back onto the roadway and visibility across the summit was “near zero.”
“This isn’t inconvenient weather. This is unsafe travel,” the agency wrote, urging drivers not to travel unless absolutely necessary.
Officials said the freeway will reopen when conditions are safe.
