REDDING, Calif. — A Shasta County Jail inmate who was hurt after jumping from an upper tier tried to escape while receiving medical care at a local hospital Wednesday afternoon and fought with two deputies assigned to guard him, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office said.
The incident began about 2:40 p.m. earlier today, when the inmate jumped from the upper tier and landed on the lower level of his housing unit, the sheriff’s office said. The inmate, Jordan David Lee Moore, 26, suffered injuries the agency described as non-life-threatening.
Medical staff provided first aid, and Moore was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment, the sheriff’s office said.
While awaiting treatment, Moore “became noncompliant and attempted to escape,” the sheriff’s office said. The agency said Moore assaulted and violently resisted the two correctional deputies guarding him and told them to shoot him while he resisted.
Redding police officers and hospital security responded to assist, the sheriff’s office said. After a brief struggle, Moore was restrained and brought under control. The sheriff’s office said neither the deputies nor Moore were injured during the altercation.
After receiving treatment for his initial injuries, Moore was returned to the Shasta County Jail. The sheriff’s office said Moore later admitted he was trying to escape.
Moore is expected to face additional charges, including assault on a peace officer, resisting an executive officer by force or intimidation, and attempted escape from custody, the sheriff’s office said. The sheriff’s office did not release details about why Moore was initially being held
