REDDING, Calif — Shasta County Assessor-Recorder Leslie Morgan filed paperwork Monday morning, Feb. 9, 2026, to seek another term, according to a social media post she wrote the same day.

“What a great morning! I filed my paperwork to run to continue as your Assessor-Recorder!” Morgan wrote in the post.

Morgan said she still needed to gather filing signatures “over the next couple of weeks,” and asked anyone interested in signing to let “John Morgan or me” know.

Morgan has held the office since she was elected on Nov. 7, 2006, according to her county biography. She began working in the assessor-recorder’s office in 1995 as an auditor-appraiser.

A lifelong Shasta County resident, Morgan graduated from Enterprise High School, earned an associate degree in business from Shasta College, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration with an option in accounting from California State University, Chico, the biography says. It also says she holds an Advanced Appraiser Certificate issued by the California State Board of Equalization.

Morgan’s office has drawn attention in recent years during a dispute with Supervisor Kevin Crye. In October 2024, Morgan described Crye’s visit to the assessor-recorder’s office on personal business as concerning.

Morgan told Shasta Scout she would not allow staff to face retaliation for reporting the incident and said officials should be “treated like every other taxpayer.” Crye told the outlet he “greatly apologized” if he made any staff uncomfortable, the report said.

The Shasta County assessor-recorder is on the June 2, 2026, primary election ballot.
